Academic Speaking and Listening Comprehension

Course Content:
Emphasis will be placed on learning new vocabulary and using it to communicate in a classroom setting (presentations, pair work, group work, and class discussion). We will practice comprehension by listening to the teacher, watching videos, and practicing other listening exercises. You will also do several written assignments. Where appropriate, we will practice pronunciation.

Course Objectives:
Upon completion of this course, you will be able to use English to:
 Effectively use a monolingual dictionary
 Describe people, places, and objects
 Talk about food, clothing, and transportation
 Discuss occupations and duties
 Discuss the weather and other environmental issues
 Understand and discuss various academic areas, including U.S. government
 Make plans and practice critical thinking
 Use the internet to conduct research
 Present research findings to your colleagues
 Create a personal web site that you will update and share with each other

Required Texts:

1. Jenkins, The Heinle Picture Dictionary, (Thomson/Heinle, 2005).

2. Foley, The Heinle Picture Dictionary Intermediate Workbook, (Thomson/Heinle, 2005)

3. Heinle’s Newbury House Dictionary of American English** (Fourth Edition), (Heinle, 2004)

**You may not use electronic dictionaries in the classroom.

Also Required:
One spiral-bound notebook with pockets.

Assessment:
You will be assessed on participation, attendance, written assignments, your work in the language lab (Rosetta Stone), and quizzes.


Absence / Lateness Policy
You are expected to come to class ON TIME and EVERY DAY. For a 9:00 class, you should be in your seat and ready to begin at 9:00, not 9:05. If you are late twice, or fall asleep once, this will count as one absence. If you have more than three unexcused absences, you may fail the course.

Tests and Quizzes:
I will give you quizzes to check your understanding of each unit in the Picture Dictionary. We will also have quizzes based on what you do in Rosetta Stone.

A note on participation:
If you are having problems in class, please ask for help immediately. If you don’t understand something, please let me know right away. If I call for questions and you don’t ask, I will assume you know the material.

University classes in America require you to ask questions if you don’t understand and to participate in groups and pairs by asking for opinions, asking for clarification, and telling people what you think. Asking questions shows that you are interested—it does not mean that you are ignorant or dumb. Imagine how boring class would be if no one talked!

Please note that you are responsible for your own learning. I will not accept homework or papers late. We will begin each class with the previous day’s homework. I’m always available to help you with any questions you have.
